I believe that building a strong education system not only benefits our children, but strengthens our community, State, and Nation. As a parent, former Air Force officer, serial entrepreneur, and current Flat Rock area business owner, I understand the hard work it takes to give our children every opportunity for success in a complex world.
When my family was relocated to Michigan from Ohio in 2004 our top priority was finding the right community for our three children. And considering I worked for Quicken Loans in Livonia, at that time–Flat Rock might have seemed an unlikely find. Fortunately for us we were willing to look far and wide for that ideal place.
We visited communities from Birmingham, to Ypsilanti, to Monroe, and of course the more obvious options close to workâLivonia and Novi. All of those cities were very nice, but when we visited Flat Rock it had a remarkable charm that we immediately fell in love with.
You see the people of Flat Rock, who have lived here much longer built something remarkable, something that captured the Rice family. That is why we immediately felt it important to get involved and give back.
In our five years as a resident of Flat Rock I, and my wife Heather, have deeply involved ourselves in the community and particularly the school system.
Every year we have volunteered in the classrooms, helped with the Chess Club, leading after school clubs, as members and officers of our children’s respective parent/school organizations, and helping with a host of other school activities, events, and field trips.
We also feel strongly that our children’s education extends beyond the classroom so you have also probably met Heather or I as an AYSO soccer coach, helping with Flat Rock little league baseball, attending Flat Rock track meets and football games, running in the Race for Ryan. There are so many opportunities for our children to have incredible experiences in our safe and active community.
I am looking forward to taking my involvement in Flat Rock and the schools to a new level. I am committed to dedicating my experiences and professional skills towards lifting Flat Rock schools even higher.
