Shared a Pizza at Embers Grille with Long-time Friends of Flat Rock Schools

The Embers GrilleI had a great time last night meeting with some long-time friends of Flat Rock schools. We shared a pizza and talked about the big picture in education.

One of the big things we talked about was kids succeeding. You know not every kid in Flat Rock is going to succeed in the same way, and if we don’t think like that then less will succeed at all. Let me tell you a personal story to illustrate my point…

I was lucky when I went through school. The classroom was easy for me, grades we easy for me, sports were easy for me. I graduated from High School and got a Congressional Appointment to the Air Force Academy. I did get my butt kicked a little there because I was competing against the best in the Nation, at everything. But, still pretty easy. What most people think of when they think education was pretty easy for me.

Now, let me tell you the story of my brother. He did okay in school, probably because he loved wrestling and needed grades to keep him on the team. He went to the local university where I grew-up. He failed out twice. Then he did what he was passionate about–he went and learned to be an auto mechanic. He graduated at the top of his class. He is the best auto mechanic in Kentucky. I am proud of my little brother!

Did we succeed? Yes!

We both have wonderful marriages, beautiful children, nice homes, and provide well for the family. We both succeeded, but our paths to equal successes were much different.

I believe that giving our children the best opportunity for success in the future means being mindful of the big picture in education. That requires us to pave multiple roads to success.

We need to bring together all the resources of Flat Rock to ensure all our kids have these multiple routes to success. We need to consider our classrooms, our teachers, our parents, our athletics, our specials, our community when we make decisions about education. After all, some kids will perform better because of a teacher, a coach, a sport, the band, a civic club, their church, a community leader.

It does take a village to raise a child. And I believe we have one of the best ones.

What do you think?

I would love to hear your thoughts. What are we doing really well in Flat Rock education? What do you think are opportunities for us to improve? Leave a comment below, email me: wmrice@gmail.com, or call me 734-775-4487.

Visited the Flat Rock Ram Boosters

Flat Rock High SchoolI stopped in on the Flat Rock Ram Boosters on Monday night. What a great group of folks!

This group of current high-school parents and long-time supporters of Flat Rock athletics run a full agenda. They are busy preparing for the kick-off of the new school year and fall sports. Needless to say, they need a lot of help. Unfortunately, this is not unique to the Ram Boosters. There are always too few people (often the same people from group to group) doing too much of the heavy lifting.

Really it only takes a little bit of time to give back for all the enjoyment you and your kids get back from these organizations.

One of the areas where they need some extra help is in running the concessions. This is really a simple job, but takes several people. Have you ever enjoyed a hot dog (or two) at a Flat Rock football game? How about asking how you can help?

I encourage you to stop by the next Ram Booster meeting on September 21, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Flat Rock High School media center. You don’t have to be a student athletes’ parent, just a fan.

Also, as you are out and about Flat Rock I would encourage you to thank a few of the people I had the chance to meet and do so much for all the athletic programs in Flat Rock:

  • Jeff Metz
  • Chuck Slavin
  • Don Shannon (the man to talk to about helping with concessions)
  • Gail Potratz
  • Dawn Guyot
  • Eric Painter

I am sure there are more and I look forward to meeting more of you as I pitch in too. Oh, and by the way don’t miss these varsity home openers:

  • 8/28 – Flat Rock Boys Soccer v. Airport – 4:30 p.m.
  • 9/11 – Flat Rock Boys Football v. CC – 7:00 p.m.
  • 9/14 – Flat Rock Girls Volleyball v. Huron – 6:00 p.m.

Go Flat Rock Rams!

Bill Rice is Running for Flat Rock School Board

DSC_4676Thanks for coming by and visiting!

We are just getting started here, but you can expect a lot from this site in the next few months and beyond. One of my main goals in running for the School Board is to demonstrate how hard I am willing to work for you, our community, and most importantly our children. That means meeting as many of you as possible, asking lots of questions, listening to your expectations and hopes.

So, what’s in store for this website and how will it benefit you?

Of course, I am going to give you tons of information on what being a member of the Board of Education means to me. However, I want to go beyond that typical political rhetoric. I am also going to use this website as a way to take you on a guided tour of all the great things the Flat Rock education system has to offer our students and the community. I want you to walk with me as I engage with the people, groups, and administration that make Flat Rock an exceptional place to educate your kids.

Will you join me? Think of this website as more than a Board of Education candidate’s site. Use it as a resource, a place for discussion, a way to improve communication, and a quick way to find out how to contact me when you have a question.
